Wall Dampness the spoilsport of our Dream Home

How often we save for a big occasion…

After lots of denials, we arrive at a decision to finally revamp the interiors…

The D day has arrived… we are eager to go ahead of doing the interiors of our dream home…..

Arrangements are made for fix furniture….

Fancy fittings….

Exquisite fabric….

Now…. after facing a lot of hardships, we have finally realised our dreams of changing the decor of our dream home….

We spread the message amongst our near dear ones, friends…. neighbours…. (anxious neighbours who heard a lot of banging, dust, debris flying around in our home) sometimes feeling disturbed, sometimes being angry, yet bearing with us to see the final out come, as they too are secretly planning to revamp the interiors of their dream homes…

The message is spread like wild fire that our dream home looks like a dream home. We receive visitors after visitors, everyday every week.

After couple of months, we suddenly notice a patch on one of our wall, feeling awful and nervous…

Slowly, slowly the patch becomes ugly, uglier and uglier…

We can no longer bear it, we pick up our phone and call the person who painted the house… giving him/her a good yelling.

The person who painted our house is as confused as we are, as in the budget we had kept aside for painting the house, we could only get a painter and not a specialist….

Most part of our hard earned money was spent on furniture, fancy fixtures, fancy plumbing materials, exotic fabric for curtains, bed sheets and their likes…

Disgusted with the painter and his/ her disgusting work, after lengthy arguments, feeling cheated we turn towards second third fourth advice.

The part of the puzzle becomes more unbearable as it is dry summer and we are experiencing dampness with formation of white flakes which gives an ugly look to  our interiors with musty…. smell.

Finally to get to the bottom of the entire ordeal, we shell out more money to bring in a specialist….

For the first time we hear the word Efflorescence…

What is the damn thing called Efflorescence ? Which has shattered our dreams of peaceful living…

Where could we have gone wrong…

Due to the use of salt water during construction and through rains, the salts (like sulfates or magnesium, sodium, calcium and calcium carbonate) present in the wall get dissolved. On evaporation, the previously absorbed water along with salts appear on walls forming crystallized patches or a layer of white powder. This white powder is know as efflorescence.

The specialist advices us that before affixing fixed furniture and fixtures, a survey ought to have been done and the walls should have been waterproofed…

Now what could be the solution…

Madam/Sir, you need to dismantle the fix furniture, fixtures and wall fittings…

The above words meant like lightning striking upon us…

If only and only if someone had advised….

Interior Tips, Do’s and Don’ts

This is the first post on my new blog. I’m just getting this new blog going, so stay tuned for more. Subscribe below to get notified when I post new updates.

Home, house, is dear to all, as we are anxious to be reunited with our family, who aim to support, give us joy, make us happy and sometimes make us angry( laughs)….

We all want our home to look good and appealing, to our family, friends, neighbours….

We try to paint, modify, use fabric, furniture, lighting…. to create joy for our family and at the same time impress our friends and neighbours.

We want to do all the above but….

We have limited money and resources…..

Hence we do not have the privilege of going wrong…

But hey what if we find a person who has been experimenting with interiors his whole life, and has gone wrong and right over the years, to share his knowledge with us…..

Would be a great idea….

And, if it does not cost a dime would be a greater idea…

So hang on and follow me….

My name is Boorjis Doctor, you can call me Doc as all my friends do…

I came from a middle class family, and am born and based in Mumbai India.

We did not have extra money to hire professional help, whether it be painting the house, plastering, plumbing or doing the Electricals…

And my passion for home interiors started by the time I reached eleven.

All through out my journey of life I learnt to do things the right way as well as the wrong way….

Sometimes losing money and sometimes saving great cost in doing my home interiors for my family, near dear friends and immediate neighbours.

So if you like to join me, it would be my pleasure to help you in your journey in restoring your dreams that you call a home….
